The Problem With SSI
Too many people are relying on SSI these days to pay their bills. Far too many. In fact, I would guess that most people are. Many of the people I know like to think that focusing on SSI will guarantee their financial future; looking at other options is too much of a distraction. Ok, tell me that when your SSI is no longer around to support your needs.
What? Why am I talking about Social Security, or more specifically, Supplemental Security Income? I’m not! Most of us in the “baby boomers” category or younger feel pretty confident that Social Security will either not be around when its “our turn”, or our share will be so small that it won’t be of much use to us. No, the SSI I’m speaking of is not related to Social Security, or any other government program for that matter. The SSI I’m speaking of is Single-Streamed Income.

We’ve all heard the phrase “don’t put all of your eggs in one basket”. If you do, and you drop the basket, or the basket breaks through no fault of your own, the eggs are gone. It’s much better to use multiple baskets for carrying those precious eggs. Yet, we’ve all been taught to “go to school, get a good education, and get a good job with benefits”. That job is our egg basket. If we drop the basket, or in this case the proverbial ball, we may lose that job. Or if, through no fault of our own, the company goes out of business or otherwise downsizes, the result is the same. Broken eggs.
Going into business for yourself can lead to similar results. If you own a brick and mortar business selling widgets, and limit your supplier of widgets to one company, what happens if that supplier goes out of business? What if you can’t pay the expenses of your business while you’re searching for another supplier? All of your eggs get broken.

This scenario is exactly the same in the home based business arena. Many companies want you to distribute their products or services exclusively, and most pay very handsomely (to the top 3% or so). What if you spend years struggling to build your business with a particular company and they sell out or go bankrupt? What if you spend years building a successful business with a particular company and they sell out or go bankrupt? If you’re dealing with SSI, you’ve discovered the point at which the successful and unsuccessful merge. You guessed it – broken eggs!
There is no denying the power of focus, and the basic premise of focusing on any job at hand is sound advice. Hopping from one opportunity to the next is really no more advantageous than sticking with one company that eventually goes belly-up. So how does one go from a single stream of income to multiple streams of income and remain focused? It isn’t that difficult, if you really think about it. What does sporting goods, cosmetics, hardware, and bed sheets have in common? Individually, they are totally unrelated. But under the umbrella of a single business, they become departments. Do “department stores” have a problem with focus? If a particular department becomes obsolete, does the business close its doors? No, it continues to build upon its other departments, or streams of income, while it searches for something to replace that department with.
Your home based business is really about you, not the company you align yourself with. Is that company being run from somebody’s home, or is there a corporate office somewhere? Why shouldn’t you decide what departments your business is going to offer? I suggest you diversify, create multiple streams of income. These departments can be related, if that helps you to focus on your business. Remember, the whole concept of a home based business is being in business for yourself!
I am currently in the process of writing an ebook in which I explain how to work effectively with a handful of different companies at the same time. The act of promoting them individually is virtually the same as promoting them together. In other words, they are all promoted at the same places in the same way, so why not promote you instead of promoting them? If all you want to do is promote somebody else or their product, you may as well stick with your job (and hope it sticks with you). If you’d like to get a copy of this ebook ($47 value) free, just drop me a line and I’ll see to it that you get one as soon as it’s released.
Until then, diversify!
